September 2, 2015 - December 11, 2015Tuesday - Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM BLACK CHRONICLES II - U.S. Premiere Presented by Autograph ABP at the Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African & African American Art The stunning mix of rare and mostly never-scene images depicts both ordinary and prominent citizens — artists, dignitaries, servicemen, missionaries, students, businessmen, and international royalty — captured in portraits by professional photographers. Drawing on the metaphor of the chronicle the exhibition presents over 200 photographs, the majority of which have never been exhibited or published before. As a curated body of work, these photographs present new knowledge and offer different ways of seeing the black subject in Victorian Britain, and contribute to an ongoing process of redressing persistent ‘absence’ within the historical record.
