Why did you become a fashion designer?
I love this question, because it all happened by accident. I never intended to be a “fashion designer”. I started making clutches for myself using the little bit I knew about sewing that I learned from my mother. Before I knew it, I started getting compliments and wonderful feedback so I decided to step out on faith and use my talents to start V-Lure Designs. So far it has been a wonderful learning experience.
What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?
My favorite part has to be the flexibility and ability to create! There’s so much that can be done and my imagination is the only thing that can stop me. I love the creativity!
What was your inspiration for creating this collection for Modere?
Definitely CLASS! This selection that I put together for Modere is a mixture of different styles. I played a lot with a variety of textures. It’s fun, classy, and versatile!
What are your go-to materials and which materials are harder to work with?
I have two go-to materials: african print and faux leather. African print because I love the vibrant colors and patterns, and faux leather because it is cost effective and I like to provide my customers with fabulous clutches that will not “break” their pockets. I believe in looking fabulous for less!
Genuine leather has to be the hardest to work with, which is why we have yet to introduce leather clutches to our clientele. However, we are looking into the possibilities to do so.
If you could collaborate with any designer who would it be and why?
Without thinking about it the designers I would like to collaborate with are KREYOL and Prajje Jean-Baptiste. I am a supporter of these designers and I am very intrigued with their designs. Not to mention they are both Haitian designers who incorporate the Haitian culture into their collections. I hope to work with them in the future to create clutches and bags that compliment their designs for the runway. As a Haitian designer, it has been one of my goals to include the Haitian culture in my clutches, which is why we created the line Caraïbes Collection, it includes clutches and tote bags that are inspired by Haiti. We have many more exciting ones coming in the Spring!
What is your definition of modesty in fashion today?
The first word that comes to mind is CLASS! Modesty reminds me of Coco Chanel’s quote “A woman should be two things: Classy and Fabulous”. Fabulous isn’t always classy and classy isn’t always fabulous, one must be able to have a balance of both. Simplicity sometimes is the best way to go! Less is always more!
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to continue with V-Lure Designs, expand our clientele. I hope to bring V-Lure Designs to different states such as New York, Georgia and Florida in the upcoming year. We hope to collaborate with other entrepreneurs in the fashion industry. Looking ahead I hope to work with artisans in Haiti to create our bags.
